Economic Debating Club

Is the market the new "god" of the 21st century or just another "golden calf"? Is the rate of interest as important as central banks want us to believe? Who benefits from globalization? Is economic growth still necessary in an affluent society? These are amongst the issues members of the general public can discuss in a course at the Volkshochschule Frankfurt. You do not need to be an economist to participate. If you are interested in how the "real world" works and on which theories this is based, come for a series of lively discussion evenings.

Course number. 4275-31, Discussion leader: Karl Heinz Retzmann 23 Apil – 25 June, 10x
VHS, Sonnemannstraße 13, 60314 Frankfurt; Fee: € 150, Registration:   http://www.vhs.frankfurt.de

Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA)

From 2014, all European payments will change to a consistent payment area under the name of SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area). The 22-digit International Bank Account Number (IBAN) then replaces the traditional account number and bank routing number and is mandatory for both credit transfers and direct debits.

Consistent payments
With SEPA companies use uniform procedures and formats for all transactions. Thus, the accounting for Euro payments is concentrated on one account and Euro accounts in other countries are superfluous. Additionally, the SEPA process reduces the expense of customer data management by using uniform data such as IBAN and BIC of all European business partners. Moreover, the new SEPA provides the ability to better control cash flows and liquidity by introducing a specific due date.

Early preparation
Companies should prepare the migration to the SEPA system as soon as possible, because the deadline is only eight month away. Professional and technical adjustments are necessary in companies processes and software systems. For example, all forms, documents and letters are required to check for changes and accounting must adapt in the master data for customers and vendors.

Question of the Month

Why do the Frankfurt CCI and German Stock Exchange share a joint building?

The location of the CCI in the middle of the Frankfurt am Main financial metropolis has a long tradition. When the CCI was founded in 1808, the Prince Primate of the Confederation of the Rhine, Karl Theodor Freiherr von Dalberg, determined that the CCI also had to manage the business of the stock exchange, which had been in existence since 1585. As a result, the CCI was also responsible for the new building at the location of the stock exchange in 1879. Since 1991, the CCI has no longer been the legal financing body of the Frankfurt securities exchange.
